departure as soon as possible. The position is initially limited to 36 months with the possibility of extension subject to the availability of resources. The duration of employment is governed by the law on fixed-term research contracts (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz – WissZeitVG). The position offers the possibility of obtaining an additional academic qualification (eg a doctorate).

Tasks: We are seeking applications for a PhD position in quantum technologies for the QuaPhySI project, which investigates quantum bridge technologies with potential for application to future generations of communication networks and to the quantum internet. To this end, a holistic concept for a network architecture based on physical layer service integration (PLSI) will be designed. Compatibility with 6G networks will be ensured. The concept will be made accessible and evaluated by emulating the entire quantum classical network protocol stack. The concrete building blocks of the roadmap are tangle-assisted data transmission (ED) and unconscious transfer (OT). The project focuses on secure and efficient classical quantum communication networks, also considering classical quantum error correction procedures for reliability. In this context, the successful candidate will have to work on the theoretical definition of the relationship between industrial requirements and communication and mathematical/physical tasks in PLSI. The work will also focus on identifying use cases for future classical quantum communication networks and the various possible industrial application scenarios considering effective, efficient and secure communication with PLSI. In parallel, the evaluation from the network point of view taking into account the defined use cases and KPIs will also be carried out. Then, the candidate will study the resilience of the system against possible attacks. This will include creating a general theory of basic protocols related to point-to-point transmissions. Next, the successful candidate will design the classical quantum protocols and characteristics of the link and network layers. This includes the study of methods to provide flow control and reliable communication (at the bit/qubit and packet level), as well as the management and control of entanglement generation and distribution, frame routing quantum and the impact on classical packets. Regarding packet reliability, the candidate will have to deal with the design of the network coding for the classical-quantum protocol stack.

Requirements: university degree (Diploma/Master) in physics, mathematics, electrical and electronic engineering, telecommunications engineering or computer science; knowledge of quantum mechanics and/or network coding is strongly recommended; fluency in English and good oral and written communication. Previous experience with C/C++ and Python programming languages ​​is also highly recommended.
