“Chasing Waterfalls” is the first-ever opera in which the AI ​​sometimes creates parts of the music, text and performance, live and autonomously, according to the opera.

The star character from the Semperoper Dresden will appear as an 8-meter AI-powered kinetic light sculpture.

In one of the seven scenes, the AI ​​takes over on its own, while in others it interacts with human performers.

Director and media artist Sven Sören Beyer says he finds the interaction between people and machines fascinating. “Dancing points of light in the sky affect us emotionally, for example, whether they are shooting stars or generated by technology,” he says.

“We try to probe these mechanisms in an artistic way: when does technology become emotional, how can people be affected by the use of technology.”

Beyer considers “Chasing Waterfalls” an important contribution when it comes to debates about the future and questions about the extent to which people will let artificial processes make decisions that will influence their lives.

Artificial intelligence already surrounds us today, profiling us, sending us personalized ads and making suggestions on what to listen to, watch and buy.

“The digital world has long influenced real decisions,” says Beyer. He is excited about the possibility of creating something new with AI in what he sees as a major creative opportunity.

As AI applications for creating artwork proliferate, Beyer believes the same creative approach can be applied to music, he says.

“It’s exciting to take that step and not have it all in your hands,” he says, referring to the scene in which the artificial intelligence writes, composes and sings its tune – about itself.

The piece was created with the help of Norwegian soprano Eir Inderhaug, who spent two weeks in a recording studio giving voice to technology.

The AI ​​then developed the content on its own, after receiving the following instruction: “Write an opera aria in which you reflect on yourself. You have the right to be cynical and humorous.

The author of the opera script, librettist Christiane Neudecker, initially had doubts even though she had experimented with AI text generators in the past.

However, she later came to accept the AI ​​as a creative partner. “The exchange was surprisingly inspiring, both poetically and content-wise,” says Neudecker.

The text passage will be created shortly before the performance, although Beyer will sign each text written by the AI.

“We were surprised in one of the scenes because it now contains content that we did not know. It’s the experience,” says Beyer.

That doesn’t mean it has to apply to opera as a whole, though, he says. The team felt it was important to have a plot. “The human ego finds itself in an identity crisis, amid all its digital projection surfaces and representations of itself, and is forced to move.”

Soprano Inderhaug stars in the work, playing herself as well as her digital twin.

In all, the performance features six vocal soloists, a virtual voice and a chamber orchestra in a piece that lasts 70 minutes.

Hong Kong artist Angus Lee, as co-composer and conductor, will be on the podium at the head of the musicians.

The work is then set to travel to the New Vision Arts Festival in Hong Kong for a performance in November.

Professor Karl Leo has been thinking about realizing this component for more than 20 years, now it has become reality: His research group at the Institute for Applied Physics of TU Dresden has presented the first high-efficiency organic bipolar transistor. This opens up entirely new perspectives for organic electronics, both in data processing and transmission and in medical technology applications.

The invention of the transistor in 1947 by Shockley, Bardeen and Brattain at Bell Laboratories ushered in the era of microelectronics and revolutionized our lives. First, so-called bipolar transistors were invented, in which negative and positive charge carriers contribute to current transport, and unipolar field-effect transistors were added later. The increase in performance due to the scaling of silicon electronics into the nanometer range has dramatically accelerated data processing. However, this very rigid technology is less suitable for new types of flexible electronic components, such as rollable television screens or for medical applications on or in the body.

For such applications, transistors made of organic semiconductors – carbon-based – have received particular attention in recent years. Organic field effect transistors were introduced as early as 1986, but their performance still lags far behind silicon components.

A research group led by Prof. Leo and Dr. Hans Kleemann at TU Dresden has now succeeded in demonstrating a highly efficient organic bipolar transistor. The use of highly ordered thin organic layers was crucial for this. This new technology is many times faster than previous organic transistors, and the components have reached gigahertz operating frequencies, or more than a billion switching operations per second. Dr Shu-Jen Wang, who co-led the project with Dr Michael Sawatzki, explained: “The first realization of the organic bipolar transistor was a big challenge, because we had to create very high quality layers and new structures. . However, the excellent component parameters reward these efforts!” Professor Leo added: “We have been thinking about this device for 20 years and I am delighted that we have been able to demonstrate it with the new highly ordered layers. The organic bipolar transistor and its potential open completely new perspectives for organic electronics. because they also enable demanding tasks in data processing and transmission.Possible future applications are, for example, smart patches equipped with sensors that process sensor data locally and communicate wirelessly with the outside.

The Hindus urge Semperoper Dresden (Germany) to abandon its next production of “La Bayadère”; scheduled from February 15 to March 05, 2023; which they say seriously trivializes Eastern and other religious traditions.

Prominent Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada (USA) today, said the Dresden Semperoper, which would have been funded by taxpayers, “one of the finest opera houses in the world”, should not be devoted to the ruthless promotion of the appropriation of the traditions, elements and concepts of “others”; and ridicule entire communities.

Zed, who is president of the Universal Society of Hinduism, said the deeply problematic ballet was a blatant disparagement of a rich civilization and showed 19th-century Orientalist attitudes. He also urged Semperoper Dresden to apologize for such an inappropriate selection.

Semperoper Dresden should have been mature before choosing a ballet like “La Bayadère” (The Temple Dancer), showing the Western caricature of Eastern heritage and encouraging ethnic stereotypes; noted Rajan Zed.

It was highly irresponsible for Semperoper Dresden to choose such a ballet which had been blamed for patronizing a flawed mishmash of Orientalist stereotypes, dehumanizing cultural representation and misrepresentation, offensive and demeaning elements, unnecessary appropriation of cultural motifs , essentialism, superficial exoticism, caricature, etc. Semperoper Dresden could do better than this to serve its various stakeholders; Zed said.

Rajan Zed also urged the Prime Minister of the Free State of Saxony, Michael Kretschmer, to seriously address this issue of cultural stereotypes in the Semperoper Dresden.

Zed suggested to Semperoper Dresden’s artistic director Peter Theiler and general manager Wolfgang Rothe that they reevaluate its systems and procedures and send its executives for cultural sensitivity training so that such inappropriate things do not creep in in the future.

Like many others, Hindus also consider ballet as one of the revered art forms that offers richness and depth. But we are well into the 21st century now, and “La Bayadère”, which was first presented in Saint Petersburg (Russia) in 1877, is long awaited for a final retirement from the world stage; emphasizes Rajan Zed.

DRESDEN, Maine – Angie Jordan said she couldn’t imagine her life without her three adult children and two grandchildren. Jordan raised the family in Maine, where his mother was born and raised. But when she was 4, her mother took Jordan to Louisiana.

“My mother lived a somewhat difficult life. She was a little overwhelmed and couldn’t pull herself together,” Jordan said on Zoom on Friday.

In December 1981, Jordan’s mother, Michele Elaine Oakes, disappeared. Jordan spent time living with his mother’s friend afterwards. After local government agencies realized Jordan was not with her family, they asked her if she had any relatives she could live with.

She returned to Dresden and lived with her aunt and uncle until adulthood, but the question of what happened to her mother persisted. Jordan said she started actively searching for answers when she was 15.

Years later, the St. Martin’s Parish Sheriff’s Office performed multiple DNA tests and used new facial recognition technology in hopes of identifying a “Jane Doe”, who was struck and killed on December 5, 1981 in Breaux Bridge, Louisiana.

Five years ago, the agency released a digital rendition of what Jane Doe’s face would look like.

“When I saw her picture on the Facebook post, I knew it was her. I knew instantly it was her. I said, ‘That’s my mom,'” said Jordan.

After contacting local law enforcement, Jordan and his relatives took DNA tests last February to confirm his suspicions.

Last week, Jordan got a call that she’s been waiting 40 years for the answers to what happened to her mother all those years ago.

“I was relieved. I didn’t cry. When I hung up the phone I just sighed and just thought, it’s over, it’s finally over,” Jordan added.

She said she wanted closure and she found it. Jordan also spoke about the residents of Breaux Bridge and how a local funeral home covered his mother’s funeral, burial and headstone costs.

One couple even tended to their mother’s grave until their recent deaths. According to the local sheriff’s office, a new resident is keeping the memory of Michele Elaine Oakes alive.

“It’s just a reminder of how many good people are left in this world, and that’s important right now,” Jordan said.
