associated with the Head of the Spatial Information and Modeling Research Area at the Leibniz Institute for Urban and Regional Ecological Development (IOER)

in a joint appointment procedure in accordance with § 62 (2) of the Higher Education Institutions Autonomy Act of the Free State of Saxony (SächsHSFG) to be filled by January 1, 2023.

Appointment is initially limited to five years. In the event of a positive evaluation by the IOER, the employment contract at the IOER is made permanent. For the duration of the employment relationship at IOER, you (m/f/x) will be appointed to the chair and enjoy the status of university professor at TU Dresden.

The Faculty of Environmental Sciences unites – unique in Germany – the three environmentally related scientific fields of forestry, geosciences and hydrosciences under one roof. The interdisciplinary and international orientation creates great synergy potentials. Primary focal points are Earth system monitoring and modeling at global, regional and local scales, as well as sustainable human habitat development. For more than 20 years, there has been a close collaboration with the IOER in research and teaching.

The IOER is a non-university research center and a member of the Leibniz Association. As a leading center for advanced spatial sustainability science, it develops multiscale spatial information, analysis tools and knowledge, as well as policy and planning instruments that enhance adaptive capacities and of transformation in spatial contexts. To this end, the Institute strives to elucidate the internal and external sustainability orientations of individuals, organizations and society, as well as their insertion into socio-ecological and technological spatial configurations. IOER promotes gender equality and values ​​the diversity of its team. It is certified by Total-E-Quality.

You will be responsible for managing the IOER research area “Spatial Information and Modeling”, including the research data infrastructure “IOER-Monitor” located here. This will likely expand to a research data center from 2023 (subject to funding approval, with nine full-time positions on a permanent basis). At the same time, the area “Spatial Information and Spatial Modeling” of TU Dresden is to be represented by two SWS. We expect you to be willing and able to teach in English. Teaching is to be provided in the master’s programs of TU Dresden (especially spatial development and management of natural resources, geography, geoinformatics technologies). This includes supervising master’s theses and dissertations, in particular within the framework of the Dresden Leibniz Graduate School (DLGS), which is run jointly with IOER. We count on your active participation in the further development of the cooperation between TUD and IOER.

You must have an international reputation for outstanding scientific work in the field of spatial information and modeling and have experience in university teaching and mentoring young scientists. We expect comprehensive theoretical, methodological and practical knowledge in the following areas:

  • methods for monitoring and analyzing land use, housing and building stock and ecosystem services in urban, regional and/or landscape planning.
  • spatial modeling and scenario building
  • Innovative geoinformatics methods (e.g. spatial data science, GeoAI, machine learning, exploratory geovisualization, participatory modelling, decision support systems) to work on these aspects and in close connection with spatial data infrastructures (research ) national and international.

We are looking for a personality with experience in relevant fields and areas of research, as well as a demonstrably high demand for innovation in research and teaching. We expect appropriate evidence for:

  • success in independently acquiring 3rd party funding (especially DFG, BMBF, EU Horizon), project management and implementation.
  • extensive publishing activity in peer-reviewed international journals and other relevant media
  • participation in international, European and national committees, associations and networks
  • experience in personnel management and in the animation of working groups
  • ability to work together in an interdisciplinary manner, ability to work in a team and strong social skills
  • very good knowledge of English (C2) and German (at least C1); other language skills are an advantage.

You will be recruited at IOER in Dresden and will be employed for an initial period of five years at IOER on the basis of an employment contract under private law with remuneration corresponding to grade W2, salary scale W in § 34 of the Saxon Civil Code Pay Scale Act. You will take on scientific management tasks at IOER. For the duration of the existence of the working relationship on the IOER, you will be appointed Professor of Information and Spatial Modeling at TUD and you will benefit from the status of member of university lecturer at TUD. The appointment is made according to the Thuringian model in accordance with § 62 (2) of the Higher Education Institutions Autonomy Act of the Free State of Saxony (SächsHSFG); no public office or employment relationship is established with TUD. Applicants must fulfill the professional qualification requirements of § 58 SächsHSFG.
